Make different holiday plans this year

2006/03/16

Did you spend your festive season vacation at the same old boring place? Or did you mope at home not knowing where to go or even what was out there for you to do while you whiled away your annual leave? This year try something different, change your perspective and investigate the off beat holiday destinations. If you are stuck behind a desk all day and have access to the internet, take some time out during your lunch break to go online and catch great last minute specials across the country and even in neighbouring states. This service features special rates for locals that leave their holiday planning for the spontaneous.
And while you are online, remember too that local is lekker – you don’t have to travel across provincial borders to find that special, unexplored place. Alternatively, no matter where in the country you are, consider long, leisurely lunches, day trips to spas or short escapes to the lesser-known spots where outsiders won’t infiltrate.   Take the time to do things you’ve never done – be a tourist in your own town, there are very worthwhile walking city tours in Jo’burg, Cape Town and Durban. A day of adventure and adrenalin should awaken the soul and get you thinking about the New Year’s resolutions you made, so find an adventure tour operator to teach you the fine art of kloofing, bungee jumping, fly-fishing or microlighting. Or pack a tent and supplies and head north, or east, or west, or south and see where the road takes you. But if you’re less inspired, check into a decadent little boutique hotel nearby and pop home to feed the cats once a day.

In Johannesburg and the surrounding areas… the list of where to go is endless:

There are various restaurants in the Cradle of Life (Magaliesberg area), as well as excellent game reserves, where relatively friendly animals come to drink at waterholes that are visible from the decks. The Rhino and Lion Park has a baby animal sanctuary that is an absolute must no matter what your age, or try a renowned day spa for amazing pampering and decadent delights like whiskey, chocolate and champagne.

If you are in Cape Town, have you looked at a 4x4 exploration tour to provide a refuge from the tourists? The tours also provide opportunities to experience some of the country’s most incredible sights – from Orange River and Fish River Canyon to Luderitz and Sossusvlei. If you can’t escape, go and visit the V&A Waterfront and report back to the rest of us because you only get places like this in Cape Town!

And like Cape Town, Durban and the Natal Midlands is chock-a-block full of things to do, such as booking a Zulu Kingdom Beer Route Tour, or visit the famous battlefields for a real treat of legendary Rattray story telling.

Don’t wait for the December holidays to do this, go on, explore South Africa now!
