Planning your holiday should start at home

2008/12/05

Have you ever had to cut your well deserved holiday short because you needed to rush home to sort out a crisis? Arrived home to find your electricity had tripped and your fridge had gone on the blink and you needed to clean an unpleasant mess?

We offer some helpful tips on how to start planning for your holiday before you book the tickets or fill the car with petrol.  It starts at home.

Electricity
Unplug all appliances that are not going to be used such as kettles, toasters, clock radios, hi-fi systems, TV ‘S, washing machines, dishwashers etc.  It’s a good idea to also switch off your geyser.

Do not unplug your fridge/freeze unless it is empty but try not to keep too much food that could spoil.

Check security lights and the globes in these to make sure they are working properly and set timers. Try to replace lights with energy saving globes.

Set pool pumps to run less often and make sure you have checked the chemical maintenance.

Plumbing
Inspect all the taps and water outlets inside and outside your house for leaks and drips (replace any leaking seals or washers where necessary) and do not leave taps to drip, it wastes water and could cause flooding. If you have plants that need watering rather put them outside or find someone who will come and water the plants while you are away.

Two days before leaving check all drains are clear of obstructions (leaves, debris etc.) and run water through them to ensure that they are not blocked.

Building
Check your roof for any broken tiles that could allow rain into your house and replace them or have them fixed before you leave.

Check your alarm system and response at least four weeks before you go away. Do not wait too late to test it and if you have armed response, do not inform them of your test. After you have set the alarm off you should get a call from the control centre to ask you, whether your alarm is working properly or if there is a problem at home. If there is a problem the system can be fixed before you go away.

  • Check all locks and doors for security and that they are working properly.
  • Check and oil electric gates where needed.
  • Check all glass panes for cracked or broken glass and have then repaired.
  • Now all that’s left to do is pack your car and have a safe journey!
