Edcon, SA Eagle and Europ Assistance launch legal product

2006/02/01

Edcon, together with an insurance company and an assistance service company, offers Edgars and Jet customers an insurance policy to protect them against legal action.

SA Eagle Legal Expenses Underwriting Managers, a subsidiary of SA Eagle, a major player in the insurance market, underwrites the policy while the assistance services are rendered by Europ Assistance South Africa (EASA).  EASA provides telephonic advice and assistance product benefits and services, including consultation facilities, to a range of organisations.

The products, Edgars Legal Plan and Jet Legal Plan, offer Edcon account holders various options, catering for specific legal actions from civil and criminal matters to labour matters. The premiums for all of the options are below R35 per month, but each option has a maximum claim amount, per incident.

Ian Wood, Financial Services Executive said “Edcon is continually looking for ways to enhance it’s customer’s lifestyles.  The legal insurance product fits into this overall strategy and is aimed at bringing considerable value to our customers and to the Group".

While Edcon already offers its Jet and Edgars Club members free legal advice, 24-hours a day, this product is a distinct, separate offering. The Legal Plans will give account holders peace of mind, knowing that they have recourse to deal with legal actions that may be brought against them.

Only account holders are eligible for either the Edgars Legal Plan or Jet Legal Plan, and there are two methods of obtaining such a policy. Customers can enrol at any Edgars or Jet store, or by calling Edgars and Jet customer services centres for assistance (0860 112 442 and 0860 113 639, respectively).

An Edcon representative will be able to answer questions and provide the necessary information to put the electronic enrolment process into place. Once instalments have been paid and the three-month waiting period is over, the client can then make use of the services offered by the product.

Customers should note that any cases pending before enrolling for the Legal Plans, or instituted during the waiting period, will not be covered by the policy.
